A VPN encrypts your traffic. But it won't stop malware traveling through the encrypted tunnel.

NordVPN's Threat Protection Pro is a security layer that operates independently from the VPN itself. It combines ad blocking, tracker blocking, malware scanning, and phishing protection into a single tool.

This article covers the differences between Threat Protection Pro and the standard Threat Protection (formerly Lite), third-party test results, and how it compares to tools like uBlock Origin and Pi-hole.

What Is Threat Protection Pro

Threat Protection Pro is a security feature included in NordVPN's Plus plan and above. Its key differentiator is that it works without a VPN connection — just launching the NordVPN app activates the protection.

Instead of DNS-level filtering, it operates at the URL and JavaScript level. This allows it to catch malicious URLs and embedded scripts that domain-level blocking would miss.

Key features:

  • Malware scanning — real-time scanning of downloaded files (executables up to 20MB, cloud scanning up to 4MB)
  • Phishing protection — blocks malicious URLs at the browser level
  • Ad blocking — removes ads from web pages
  • Tracker blocking — blocks third-party trackers
  • URL Cleaner — automatically strips tracking parameters
  • Scam alerts — in-browser warnings when visiting known scam sites
  • Vulnerability scanner — checks installed software for known vulnerabilities (Windows only)

Features Added in 2025

Several security features were added throughout 2025:

  • Crypto wallet checker — detects risky cryptocurrency wallet addresses
  • Hijacked session alert — warns when authentication cookies appear on the dark web
  • Email protection — scans links in emails for threats
  • Adult site blocking — content filtering for mobile devices

Threat Protection Pro is available on Windows and macOS only. Linux and mobile platforms get the standard Threat Protection (DNS-based).

Threat Protection Pro vs Threat Protection

NordVPN offers two threat protection features. Despite similar names, they use fundamentally different approaches.

Threat Protection (formerly Lite) works through DNS filtering. It blocks at the domain level, so it can't catch malicious URLs on otherwise legitimate domains. Ad blocking is partial, and tracker blocking isn't available.

Threat Protection Pro inspects at the URL and JavaScript level. It scans downloaded files for malware and works independently of the VPN connection.

Third-Party Test Results

AV-Comparatives Phishing Test (January 2026)

In a phishing protection test conducted by AV-Comparatives between January 7-19, 2026, Threat Protection Pro blocked 92% of malicious sites.

This is a competitive result even compared to dedicated antivirus products. For an add-on feature bundled with a VPN, the detection rate is impressive.

That said, 92% isn't 100%. Threat Protection Pro should complement — not replace — your OS security features and browser safe browsing.

To try Threat Protection Pro, it's included in the NordVPN Plus plan at no extra cost. All plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Comparison with Other Security Tools

Some of Threat Protection Pro's features overlap with existing free tools. Here's how to think about the tradeoffs.

Ad Blocking: uBlock Origin

FeatureThreat Protection ProuBlock Origin

uBlock Origin is the gold standard for browser-based ad blocking. Its filter list customization far exceeds what Threat Protection Pro offers. However, it can't touch in-app ads or traffic outside the browser.

DNS Filtering: Pi-hole / NextDNS

Pi-hole and NextDNS protect your entire network at the DNS level. They're great for covering all devices including IoT. But DNS-level filtering can't inspect HTTPS content or scan downloaded files.

Antivirus: Malwarebytes Premium

Malwarebytes Premium is a full antivirus solution with ransomware protection and on-demand scanning. Threat Protection Pro focuses on download scanning and phishing protection — it's not a complete antivirus replacement.

Limitations and Drawbacks

No Linux or Mobile Support

Threat Protection Pro is Windows and macOS only. This is a significant limitation for developers working primarily on Linux or users wanting enhanced protection on Android. Linux and mobile users are limited to the DNS-based Threat Protection.

Not as Thorough as Dedicated Antivirus

The 92% result from AV-Comparatives is impressive, but top dedicated antivirus products score 95% and above. Threat Protection Pro is an "additional defense layer for VPN subscribers" — don't rely on it as your sole security solution.

Limited Ad Blocking Customization

You can't add or edit filter lists like you can with uBlock Origin. There are whitelist options for specific sites, but granular rule configuration isn't supported.

Requires Plus Plan or Above

The Basic plan doesn't include Threat Protection Pro. On a 2-year plan, the price difference between Basic and Plus is $0.50/month ($3.39 vs $3.89). That extra $0.50 also gets you NordPass password manager, which is decent value.

NordVPN Threat Protection

Next-gen security that blocks ads, trackers, and malware

  • Blocks malicious sites, ads, and trackers
  • Scans downloaded files for malware
  • Works independently — no VPN connection required

Wrapping Up

Threat Protection Pro is among the most capable security features bundled with any VPN service.

Strengths:

  • URL-level protection that works without a VPN connection
  • 92% phishing block rate in AV-Comparatives testing
  • Real-time scanning of downloaded files
  • No extra cost on Plus plan (NordPass also included)

Limitations:

  • Windows / macOS only (no Linux or mobile support)
  • Not a replacement for dedicated antivirus
  • Limited ad blocking customization

If you already use NordVPN or are considering it, upgrading to the Plus plan for an extra $0.50/month is worth it. Just don't treat Threat Protection Pro as your only line of defense. Combine it with uBlock Origin, Pi-hole, and your OS security features for a proper layered defense approach.
